The land around Spelthorne
Spelthorne sits on Thames river gravels between Staines and Sunbury. It is flat, heavily built-up country by the standards of the rest of our permissions, so open farmland is scarce and every field that comes available is worth walking properly.
What's underfoot
The Thames corridor here has produced prehistoric and Roman material for two centuries, largely through gravel extraction. Any surviving open ground in the district has real potential precisely because so little of it is left.
How we search here
Free-draining gravel, workable in most weather, with modern ferrous scatter close to settlement. Slow, disciplined searching pays here. Digs run midweek by written agreement with the landowner. We meet in the morning, spread out across the permission and search until mid-afternoon, refilling every hole as we go.
We have one recorded dig in the Spelthorne district, spread across 1 parish, part of 1+ digs across Surrey. Every member works to the NCMD Code of Conduct, and finds of note are reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme through our local Finds Liaison Officer.
